On Thursday, January 2, 2020 at approx. 7:26AM, the Nolan County Sheriff\u2019s Office received a call from a resident on County Road 126 about a suspicious subject.\u00a0 A white male began knocking on the resident\u2019s door and was asking to buy some bottled water.\u00a0 This individual was acting strange and said he had been lost in the area for over 6 hours.\u00a0 The man was given some water and provided with directions to the Interstate (I-20) highway.\u00a0 The man left walking in the direction of the interstate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At some point later, the man was given a ride to the I-20 Rest Stop\nlocated at about the 257 mile marker of I-20, about 4 miles inside the east\nside of Nolan County.  The resident then\ncalled the Nolan County Sheriff\u2019s Office to report this individual and his\nunusual behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Nolan County Sheriff\u2019s Deputy was dispatched and upon arriving at the\nI-20 E. bound rest area, encountered the male subject.  The man was very evasive with the Deputy and\nappeared to be providing a potentially false identity and conflicting\ninformation about his actions and movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly afterwards, around 8:30AM, another NCSO Deputy arrived and\nrecognized the subject as Edward Weldy. \nMr. Weldy has been a previous resident of the Nolan County Jail on\nseveral previous occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two Deputies recontacted Weldy and learned that there was an active\narrest warrant issued for Weldy for Parole Violation.  The warrant was a \u201cno bond\u201d violation warrant\nissued by the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole.  Once Weldy was aware that the Deputies knew\nwho he was, he bolted and ran away on foot to the south of where the Deputies\nhad located him.  Weldy ran south from\nInterstate 20 into a heavily wooded area. \nThe initial Deputy gave pursuit on foot and other law enforcement\nofficers and agencies began responding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The entire pursuit of this fugitive lasted almost exactly three (3) hours\nwith Edward Weldy being taken into custody at 11:35AM.  The Nolan County Sheriff\u2019s Office received\ngreat assistance from the following agencies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

32nd<\/sup> Judicial District Attorney\u2019s Office Investigators<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Texas Parks & Wildlife Department \u2013 Game Wardens, including a\nspecialized K-9 Game Warden stationed in Nolan County along with another\ntraditional Game Warden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Texas Department of Public Safety \u2013 Highway Patrol Troopers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) tracking dogs and horseback\nsearch crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The quick response and assistance from so many officers was instrumental\nin keeping the suspect contained within a particular area.  A subsequent spotting of the suspect by a\nBNSF Supervisor was crucial in narrowing the search area leading to the\nultimate capture of Weldy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weldy will have an additional charge of Evading Arrest added to the\nparole violation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
