Criminal Mischief (Roscoe)

On Friday, July 26, 2013, the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office received a report of criminal mischief that occurred in 1300 block of 7th Street, in Roscoe. It was reported that on Friday, July 26, 2013 between the hours of 5:00AM and 5:24AM, an unknown person traveling westbound in a white vehicle drove off the roadway and hit a gas meter, causing it to break and leak natural gas. The person then drove the vehicle through a yard of an adjacent residence, and destroyed a fence. The combined value of the damaged property is estimated at approximately $1,500.00.

Theft (Loraine)

On Monday, July 22, 2013, the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a theft that occurred in the 100 block of county road 185, in Loraine. It was reported that sometime between Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 12:00AM and Monday, July 22, 2013 at 10:00AM, an unknown person(s) drove onto the property. Once inside, the thieve(s) took farm implements that consisted of nine (9) Alabama sweeps, thirty-two (32) Purma-lock cultivator sweeps, one (1) 7-1/2 gallon propane tank, three (3) simple sweeps, one (1) 9lb sledge hammer, one (1) Proto ratchet, and an adjustable black wrench. The combined value of the property taken is estimated at approximately $2,013.20.

Criminal Mischief (Trent)

On Friday, July 19, 2013, the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a theft that occurred at the Cedar Oil pulling unit located in the 1000 block of Interstate Highway 20, in Trent. It was reported that sometime between Thursday, July 18, 2013, at 7:00PM and Friday, July 19, 2013, at 8:00AM, an unknown person(s) used fore by cutting a padlock to enter the property. Once inside, the thieve(s) took two (2) air slip dies, two (2) tubing elevators, and a clevis. The thieve(s) then intentionally caused damage to the control panel of a backhoe that was parked on the property. The combined value of the items taken and the property that was damaged is estimated at approximately $13,500.00

Texas Game Wardens Seize 10,000-plus Feet of Gill Net and Nearly 2 Tons of Marijuana

Texas Game WardenAUSTIN – Texas game wardens have concluded two separate week-long enforcement operations in South Texas that led to the seizure of more than 10,000 feet of illegal gill net, approximately two tons of marijuana, and the filing of numerous other criminal cases.

The two operations – which involved dozens of game wardens — focused on detecting and reducing criminal activity including apprehending poachers, trespassers, human smugglers, and drug smugglers in rural areas along the south Texas border region.

Operation Brush Guard took place near Kingsville and Falfurrias while Operation Tilapia focused on Lake Falcon, near Zapata.  The combined operations included integral support from the U.S. Border Patrol, county sheriffs and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

While on Lake Falcon, game wardens seized nearly two tons of marijuana from three boats while conducting surveillance on gill netters from Mexico.

During Operation Brush Guard, 345 pounds of marijuana and 3.9 grams of cocaine were seized. Additionally, game wardens filed 14 citations and warnings, and made 4 arrests.

In total, seizures from both operations included 10,240 feet of illegal gill net, 5 vessels, 4 outboard motors, 9 vehicles, 3.9 grams of cocaine, and 4,291 pounds of marijuana.

Sheriff’s Office Promotes a Safe and Enjoyable Fourth of July

US FlagFireworks are an American tradition and as the Fourth of July holiday approaches, the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office would like for everyone to have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July holiday. Beautiful and exciting to watch, fireworks are nevertheless explosive devices that can cause serious injuries and property damage. If using fireworks, please do not consume alcohol and have an accessible fire extinguisher, water supply or bucket of water nearby for emergencies.

As a reminder, pursuant to City of Sweetwater Texas ordinance, the use or discharge of fireworks, including safe and sane fireworks, are prohibited, except for designated areas where considered private property outside Sweetwater city limits within the county. If using fireworks in a designated area, please remember to read and follow all instructions and avoid lighting fireworks near flammable items or in areas where there is dry grass or brush that could catch fire.

In addition to extra patrols focused on intoxicated driving over the holiday, deputies will be prepared to enforce laws related to illegal fireworks, issue citations, and confiscate fireworks being used outside designated areas.

Using or possessing illegal fireworks is a Class C Misdemeanor.

Each year deputies respond to complaints of Fourth of July gatherings that get out of hand due to intoxication and illegal fireworks. These complaints include physical injury, property damage or neighborhood disturbances. If you are impaired in any way when you use fireworks, you increase the possibilities of misuse and injury to yourself and others. Citizens should consider that damage or injury caused by a careless act involving fireworks can bring significant civil liability.

If camping with family and friends, please remember to use extreme caution with your campfires and grills. Only light fires and grills in designated areas, never leave a fire or grill burning unattended, and always have plenty of water available. As you enjoy your Fourth of July celebrations, please remember to have a designated driver if you’ve been consuming alcohol – do not drink and drive.
