On Friday, August 28, 2015, a traffic violation prompted the stop of a Dodge truck in Sweetwater, that lead to seizure of a large amount of suspected marijuana and the arrest of a Sweetwater man.
A Nolan County deputy stopped a white Dodge truck driven by Jarvis McCann, of Sweetwater in the 900 block of Sam Houston for a disregard stop sign violation. When the deputy approached the vehicle, he noticed a small child in the bed of the truck; he could also smell a strong odor of burnt marijuana emitting from the interior while speaking with McCann, justifying a “probable cause” search.
During the traffic stop, Nolan County communications received information from the Sweetwater Police Department regarding citizen complaints of a white Dodge truck stopping at several residences and conducting what was believed to be drug transactions. This information was relayed to the deputy conducting the stop.
A search of the vehicle was conducted which lead to the initial discovery of a usable amount of suspected Marijuana. The deputy continued the search and located a natural compartment area within the vehicle filled with numerous small bags of suspected Marijuana that appeared to be packaged for sale.
McCann was placed under arrest and transported to the Nolan County jail where he was charged with the felony offense of delivery of Marijuana in a drug free zone. The child was released to the mother who arrived on scene after being contacted by deputies. The case will be filed with the 32nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
